Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)

SFTP is a secure technology that allows for the storage and transfer of files from one environment to another.

Currently, Naviance supports SFTP for OneRoster and course data files.

Naviance Course Planner subscribers can use SFTP to:

If your Student Information System (SIS) does not offer an SFTP option, you can set up Structured Query Language (SQL) with WinSVC, a free SFTP client for Microsoft Windows.

Prepare to Use SFTP to Export Data to Naviance

  1. Review the OneRoster, course catalog, course mapping, and student course data import fields to determine the data you will export from your SIS.

  2. Match the supported import fields to your SIS fields and create your data export files.

    • For course related files, you must save the data files as a CSV or tab-delimited file, less than 10MB. Zip the file if needed.

    • For OneRoster files, you must save the data files in the CSV format and zip the file.

  3. Use the data import feature in Naviance to map fields for each import type.

You must map the fields and set the column orders again if you add data fields to your file or change the column order.

Set up SFTP in your SIS

  1. In Naviance, select Setup, Settings, and then choose Configure SFTP to obtain the SFTP credentials.

  2. From your SIS, select SFTP as your export location.

  3. In the Host field, enter sftp-data.naviance.com.

  4. In the Port field, enter 22.

  5. Enter the Username and Password fields copied from Naviance.

  6. If setting up SFTP to import course data from Naviance:

    • Enter the file name from Naviance.

      • For districts: NavianceStudentCoursePlansNameofDistrict_YearStart-YearEnd.csv

      • For schools: NavianceStudentCoursePlansNameofSchool_YearStart-YearEnd.csv

    • Enter the file type and delimiter.

  7. If setting up SFTP to import your SIS OneRoster data:

    1. Enter the file name for Naviance in the external SFTP tool.

      1. For district only: NavianceOneRoster.zip

    2. Use the OneRoster Data Integration from Naviance

  8. Follow the instructions for your SIS to set up the frequency of:

    • A recurring export of course data to the SFTP.

      • Name the column headers in your data files according to the headers provided in the templates.

      • Name your export file CourseCatalog, CourseMapping, or StudentCourseData.

      • Select .csv or .txt as the file type.

    • A recurring import of course data from the Naviance SFTP.

      • When exporting course data from your SIS, the import to Naviance happens automatically according to the frequency you selected. Moving forward, update course data in your SIS, not in Naviance.

      • When importing course data from Naviance, the export to your SIS happens automatically according to the frequency you selected.
